Quality of Life

Famous statue of Otway Burns graces our town square.

Yancey County is an ideal place to live, work, and play. It has everything anybody could want: natural beauty, a clean and safe living environment, quality schools, quality healthcare, a thriving art community, opportunities for spiritual development, and excellent shopping.

Our public schools (six elementary, two middle, and one high) are consistently recognized for academic excellence by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Mayland Community College offers young people post-secondary learning opportunities, as well as industrial training and re-training. North Caolina's sixteen-campus university system is among the finest in the nation. Three schools in the system (UNC-Asheville, Appalachian State University, and Western Carolina University) are within easy driving distance of Burnsville. Western North Carolina also hosts several fine private colleges, including Mars Hill College.

Yancey County affords excellent health care for its citizens. Spruce Pine Community Hospital is within fifteen miles of Burnsville. Mission Family Medical Center and Celo Health Center offer caring medical assistance. Mission Hospitals are in nearby Asheville and offer the services of hundreds of specialists in all health areas.

Recreational opportunities abound in Yancey County. Its rivers and streams offer opportunities for swimming, fishing, canoeing, white water rafting, and kayaking. People can camp and hike in Pisgah National Forest. Burnsville boasts a state-of-the-art, hospital-supported fitness center. Golf is available at Mountain Air Country Club and Mt. Mitchell Golf Course. The Parkway Playhouse hosts quality theatrical productions, as does the Burnsville Little Theater. Shoppers can enjoy unique stores and shops or visit any of the 1250 artisans and craftspeople in Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties.

Quality of life is important to Yancey County natives. And they are eager to share it with those who choose to become part of them.
